“Altered Carbon is a 2002 British cyberpunk novel by the English writer Richard K. Morgan. Set in a future in which interstellar travel and relative immortality is facilitated by transferring consciousnesses between bodies ("sleeves"), it follows the attempt of Takeshi Kovacs, a former U.N. elite soldier turned private investigator, to investigate a rich man's death. … “

Who am I? Am I my thoughts, body, experiences or where I am? Questions of identity kept coming up as I read this book. Good science fiction is never really about science or technology. It's always about the big ideas and questions about humanity. This one did very well in this aspect. The detective mystery solving part was also great. 

While the ideas presented are a great thought experiment it avoids the big question of who we truly are. The most important part of our being cannot be digitized as it would mean making that which is not physical into something tangible, making temporal that which is eternal.

The economic aspects were also fascinating, how would an economist analyse decisions of people who make plans lasting centuries?
