I am watching an old TV show. The comedy started in the year 2000 when mobile phones were not so widely available as they are today. I have noticed that the episode plots change with each new season as mobile phones start showing up and becoming ubiquitous. People at bars and restaurants are not looking at their phones when it starts but as the show progresses, conversations are often interrupted by the high pitch ringing of incoming calls. It's still a few years away from the first iPhone and the writers are yet to start dealing with the second problem of using smartphones, as part of the plot; the text message. Representing the online world on TV has become much harder over the years, however some writers and TV shows have created a few brilliant solutions.
Technology, like everything else, is just a tool and the best writers create amazing works of art using these new inventions. While it might seem that this changes how we tell stories, we are still telling the same plots about the hero becoming poor, or rich, about how they rise and fall, and back again. I wonder how narratives changed when air travel became popular.
