The Challenges of Being Multilingual

The Challenges of Being Multilingual

September 11, 2023

Am I losing my language, or are the 2 & 1/2 languages in my mind just fighting for my attention?

Another way to look at it is that I have more words to describe the world. For example, one of the languages has a word for the day before yesterday, the day before that day, and even the day before that day. The second language language has a word for causing someone to lose enthusiasm and initiative, especially as a result of a tedious or restrictive routine. And I recently discovered that while the third language has a word for gratitude, there is no equivalent phrase for "thank you very much". We ended up using a loan word from the first one for when we want to express gratitude or acknowledge a kind deed.

The mind might be a scarce resource and there could be a limit to how many languages we can fully know and understand.

For those who are struggling with losing a language, here is a wonderful poem I found.
